Bradd S. Atkinson is the Founder and President of Risk Mitigation, LLC. a Maryland based consulting firm that provides Safety & Security Assessments, Emergency Operation Plan Development, and a variety of different Emergency Response Training programs to its clients.
He is a retired Baltimore County Police Officer 1st Class who while active in Law Enforcement served many different positions to include Traffic Resource Management, Communications, the Special Response Team (SRT) and the Adopt a Class program where he taught crime prevention to students while on duty.
After retiring from Law Enforcement, he embarked on the private security sector in various leadership roles for several National Companies ranging from Vice President to Director level where he oversaw statewide security operations with large multi-million-dollar budgets, city business districts as well as Independent School Safety and Security programs. He has written and conducted countless Security Best Practice workshops for School, House of Worship Leadership, Licensed Security Personnel, and National Corporations. He has also written and developed community policing models and advanced school security training programs for college police departments and K-12 school security programs across the country.
He has served on teams such as the Operation Delaware Counter Terrorism Organization and the International Cargo Security Council where he played an instrumental part in crime prevention, anti-terrorism measures and risk management. He has also been a licensed Security Agency Owner as well as a licensed Private Detective. He has received extensive training from FEMA, DHS and other organizations in National Incident Management System (NIMS), Incident Command Systems (ICS), Mass Casualty Incidents, Emergency Management and Preparedness for Schools and Houses of Worship, Diversity Awareness, Cargo Security, Target Hardening, Characteristics of Armed Subjects, Counter Terrorism, Workplace Violence, Background Investigation and Visitor Management. He is trained in Behavioral Threat Assessment through Sigma Threat Management and is a Certified School Resource Officer through the National Association of School Resource Officers N.A.S.R.O.
He is an Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response Program Specialist through NFPA 3000 and is a Certified Active Shooter Instructor who trains his clients with advanced Run, Hide, Fight procedures. To date he has trained over 20,000 individuals in Active Shooter Response.
His most recent development is the Identify Report Prevent protocol which teaches participants to identify risk factors, warning signs, and pre-attack indicators which can all be precursors to violent acts and to recognize them to increase the chances of preventing a violent act from occurring. This training is used as a precursor to his Active Shooter Response Training program.
He has also been trained in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) and has worked with architects to improve target hardening designs. He is experienced with Surveillance Camera Systems and Access Control Systems and is a certified AMAG Access Control Operator.
In 2016/2017 he was awarded the Security Director of the Year Award from the Maryland Center for School Safety for his dedication and commitment to the Independent School community. In 2019 he was invited to the NBOA National Conference where he presented how to effectively implement an option-based response active shooter protocol.
He has a combined 28 plus years of law enforcement and private security experience. He has provided services to National level clients to include DuPont, Bank of America, Chrysler, Honeywell, Valero Fuel, Immigration Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) Air Operations, Legg Mason, Dell Computers Logistics Division and Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business. He has also provided services and support to countless independent schools, public school districts and large houses of worship.
He is well known for his high level of organizational professionalism, commitment to his clients, consistent method to effectively conduct assessments, develop and implement plans and procedures and his ability to conduct training programs that empower his clients to confidently respond to crisis situations.
